Poetry

Baudelaire And Poe

 By Allan Dale Maurer

 Poe and Baudelaire Meet

Walking down a New York City

Street.

They recognize each

Other

Immediately. They

Embrace.

Each sees his

Soul

Shares two bodies.

Each

Knows the other’s

Moonwhite face.

That sly, silly, smile

You see in their

Photographs

Had Mona Lisa-ed them into

The Future.

They are still

A century ahead,

Though they really

Should be dead.

Poe enters The

Betty Ford Clinic.

Baudelaire shoots up

Penicillin.

Syphillis and Alcohol

Free,

Neither can write.

Together, they decide

On a Poetic dual

Suicide.

But a smile takes

Them home to die

before they try.

Back in the 19th

Century

Neither remembers

Their meeting.

They go back to

Lonely work, vague memories

Of another time

Creeping into poetic lines.
